Hijacked cargo ship recaptured from pirates after days of fighting, Somali government says

The Turkish navy, together with Somali forces, has recaptured a ship hijacked by pirates.

The ship was secured after several days of fighting with pirates in Somali waters, the Somali government said on Saturday.

"During the 10-day operation, four boats used by the pirates were destroyed and 14 pirates were killed," a statement said.

The forces were then able to secure the cargo ship MV Latuf, which has now “resumed its journey safely.”

Pirates were active off the coast of Somalia from around 2000 until 2011. After that, pirate activity declined, thanks in part to international efforts. However, pirate attacks have been reported again this year, and in recent weeks several ships have been hijacked.
