A medicinal plant grower accused of leading an armed rebellion against police and military bases in Uganda over the weekend has been shot dead.

The man was shot dead by Ugandan security forces late Tuesday, according to Ugandan authorities. Another 20 rebel fighters were shot dead and 15 arrested.

The attack, which the man is said to have orchestrated, began on Saturday. Armed with machetes and semi-automatic firearms, his militia launched coordinated attacks in three different districts in Uganda's far west, along the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo (Congo-Kinshasa). At least one civilian and one soldier were reported to have been killed.

The leader is described as a “traditional medicinal plant grower” who has indoctrinated people into joining his movement. Medicinal plants and cult objects used to recruit and “protect” the insurgents during fighting have reportedly been seized.

Uganda's western border with Congo-Kinshasa is described as a lawless region where many militia groups are rampant, at least one of them with links to IS.
