Sweden's second-largest container port is located in Helsingborg and, according to Swedish Customs, is a central frontline in the fight against the smuggling of weapons and drugs.
The purpose of placing a fixed scanner, which can X-ray entire containers, is to combat crime in the region and strengthen the port's competitiveness.
"We do not accept that Helsingborg is used as a gateway for crime," says Christian Orsing (M), chairman of Helsingborg's municipal board, according to the press release.
"With this initiative, we are strengthening controls, pushing back against organized crime and at the same time creating better conditions for business in the region."
There is no date yet for when the scanner will be in place, but according to the Swedish Customs Administration, the hope is next year.
