Robert Lewandowski finally made his European Championship debut for Poland after injury concerns.
Then Poland fell heavily to Austria with 1–3.
After two consecutive defeats, Poland's chances of advancing are now microscopic.
Robert Lewandowski suffered a leg injury in the final rehearsal before the European Championship and therefore missed Poland's first group stage match against the Netherlands (1–2). And in the second, against Austria, "Lewy" started on the bench before finally coming onto the pitch after an hour of play.
But the comeback was not what the 35-year-old had hoped for.
Lewandowski was not credited with any goal. Instead, he was only credited with a warning after a nasty elbow, and Poland lost 1–3.
Marko Arnautovic rolled in Austria's third goal on a penalty with twelve minutes left to play, and thereafter the air went out of the Polish players who failed to come back. And now the road to the final looks very, very long.
Later on Friday, France and the Netherlands meet, and in the event of a draw or French victory, Poland is completely out of the tournament. If the Netherlands win instead, Lewandowski and his team must beat pre-tournament favourites France in the final group stage match to even have a chance of reaching third place.
