I think this is a sign of the new, more modern Swedish Academy, where this task has been in place for a few years. This is how Dagens Nyheter's cultural director, Björn Wiman, comments on the announcement that Mats Malm will resign as permanent secretary.

"This is certainly a very difficult task. You can have it for a couple of years and then someone else will take over," Björn Wiman tells TT.

Mats Malm came in as permanent secretary after the major crisis that the Swedish Academy went through.

He has been a very diplomatic and good person to have in that context.

Björn Wiman points out, among other things, that during the debate about a Swedish canon, Mats Malm represented the Academy in a "very good and intellectually solid way".

Then again, he may not always have radiated that he was very amused by this assignment.

Björn Wiman welcomes the fact that Ingrid Carlberg will take over as permanent secretary.

It is an indication that the Academy intends to take a position and continue to take a position on the big, difficult issues of the time regarding threats to democracy and freedom of expression.
