Mohammed al-Bashir is tasked with forming a temporary government, reports international media such as Bloomberg and al-Jazeera, citing Syrian media.
al-Bashir has since January this year been the equivalent of head of government for an Islamist government in northwestern Syria, where a state apparatus has been built up over several years. This has taken place under the supervision of the jihadist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), led by Abu Mohammed al-Jawlani, as the group has sought to present a more moderate image.
During his year in office in Idlib, Mohammed al-Bashir has, among other things, emphasized the need for digital government services and strengthened "Islamic and moral principles", according to reports from some Syrian media. Other Syrian media have reported on how HTS leader al-Jawlani in practice makes all major decisions as an unelected leader, with various government structures and officials as a front.
It was previously stated that the deposed President Bashar al-Assad's Prime Minister Mohammed Ghazi al-Jalali would remain in office until a transitional government takes over. According to Monday's media reports, he has met with Mohammed al-Bashir and HTS leader Abu Mohammed al-Jawlani.
