The US Supreme Court announces that it will take up the question of a law that can ban the social platform Tiktok in the USA.
Tiktok questions the law that will force the company to either sell or shut down its operations in the country unless Tiktok's Chinese parent company sells its share.
The law, signed by President Joe Biden in April, is set to come into effect on January 19. The Supreme Court announces that it will take up the question on January 10, citing freedom of speech in the US Constitution.
When the legislation was adopted, it was motivated by the fact that the USA views Tiktok as a security risk, among other things, due to sensitive data from American users being stored in China.
Tiktok has denied that Beijing has influence over its operations.
The day after the ban is planned to come into effect, Donald Trump is sworn in as the 47th President of the USA. During his previous term, Trump, like Biden, was in favor of banning the popular app, but has since changed his mind.
