In early January, the three-ton dome will be lifted off and hoisted down to the ground at the base of the tower. The renovation is expected to last until April.
It is an iconic building, believes Jeanette Bursche, director of the independent institution Rundetaarn, and she promises that the work will be carried out with care and the deepest respect for the craftsmanship and the history of the tower.
The building was built in the 17th century as an observatory for researchers at the University of Copenhagen. Today, it is also used for exhibitions, concerts and other activities.
A spiral ramp inside the tower leads visitors up to a viewing platform at a height of 34.8 meters. On the platform stands the observatory itself. In addition to the observatory roof, a telescope from 1929 will also be restored.
