Hanna Lundberg came to the competition as a Swedish outsider since she had previously shown herself to be the strongest in distance orienteering in the forest. She has also noted worse results in the previous races in this European Championship. But in the final individual sprint, she struck and came in second.
Every championship medal is extremely important. But when you then see that it's three seconds to gold, I feel. Damn, couldn't I just push a little more. But I'm satisfied. The training so far has been troubled since the World Championship. Therefore, this is like a victory for me, says Lundberg.
Notable comeback
Alva Sonesson came in fourth, but the most notable effort was made by veteran Helena Bergman. In May, she seriously injured herself in connection with Tiomila. An injury that meant she was operated on four times and had to spend almost two weeks in the hospital.
Now she made a comeback in the national team and came in sixth place.
It's surreal. The greatest form of escapism. The world is burning and I get to play again. The reason I'm standing here is that I wanted to prove to myself that I wanted to get my body back, the one I live in, says Helena Bergman in SVT.
In the men's competition, which was won by the Frenchman Mathias Barrus Vallet, Jonatan Gustafsson became the best Swede in tenth place.
