Fils-Aimé took office at the end of 2024 after his predecessor, Garry Conille, was fired. The council said a new leader would be appointed within 30 days. The change of leadership comes despite calls from the United States for political stability.
The Transitional Council was established in 2024 after a former prime minister was ousted, partly due to pressure from the United States. At that time, Haiti had descended into complete chaos, with armed criminal groups holding real power in large parts of the Caribbean nation.
The Transitional Council was also supposed to pave the way for a new parliament, but several of the council's members have been accused of corruption.
