Hadi Matar, who is charged with attempted murder and assault of Salman Rushdie, will have his sentence determined on May 16. The verdict is being postponed at the request of the defense, writes The Guardian.
The 27-year-old Matar stabbed the author more than twelve times, in the head, neck, abdomen, back, thigh, and right hand, and Rushdie was close to losing his life.
The attack took place in August 2022 in connection with a lecture in the state of New York in the USA. The author lost sight in one eye and suffered permanent damage to his left hand in the attack, which took place in front of an audience and rolling cameras.
Hadi Matar was arrested at the crime scene and has been detained since then. He has consistently denied the crime and did not testify during the trial in February, where he was nevertheless found guilty.
