The budget where the cuts are proposed is separate from the peacekeeping budget, and normally the US has accounted for around 20 percent of it. According to a high-ranking employee at the UN, the cut will mean that nearly 2,700 jobs will disappear.
The three areas of peace and security, human rights and sustainable development will be affected by the cuts, according to Guterres.
In a letter to member states and UN staff, Guterres writes that the cuts may mean that employed persons may need to be relocated, get new tasks or be laid off.
The UN General Assembly will vote on the budget before next year.
The UN has had economic problems for several years as some member states do not pay what they should, and some do not pay on time. According to the UN, the US was behind on payments at the end of January this year and has not paid anything since Trump returned to the White House. It is unclear what will happen to the US's contribution to the UN in the future. The country has previously left several UN bodies, including the World Health Organization (WHO).
