Swedish oil billionaire Torbjörn Törnqvist's company Gunvor is withdrawing its bid for Russian Lukoil's international assets after the company was called "the Kremlin's puppet" in a statement on social media from the US Treasury Department.

"As long as Putin continues his senseless killing, Gunvor, the Kremlin's puppet, will never receive a license to operate and profit," the post reads.

"President Trump has made it clear that the war must end immediately," the department added, referring to Russia's war with neighboring Ukraine.

In an email to Bloomberg, Gunvor says that the company is open about who owns the company and that the statement from the Trump administration's Treasury Department is based on a misunderstanding and is false.

Gunvor's bid for Lukoil's international assets - which are collected in a Swiss subsidiary that in 2023 reported equity of approximately SEK 200 billion - was made by Gunvor and accepted by Lukoil after the US imposed sanctions targeting the Russian oil giant Lukoil and the state-owned Russian oil company Rosneft in October.
