Shortly after midnight, local time in Sweden, the lawn outside the White House was evacuated after security personnel heard sounds of a suspected gunshot nearby.
Reporters were urged to move into the White House press center and seek shelter, and shortly thereafter a temporary lockdown of the area was implemented.
CNN, NBC and CBS are reporting, citing an unnamed police source, that at least two people were shot in connection with the incident, which is described as having occurred at a street intersection adjacent to the White House. One is said to be a suspected perpetrator, and both have been taken to a hospital.
A large police operation is underway in the area around the White House.
