"I am deeply impressed with how the operation was carried out," said Police Chief Dale Young.
The alarm was raised when a man deliberately drove into a synagogue building, which also houses a preschool. The car entered a corridor and caught fire.
The driver is dead. Security guards shot the man, Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said, but it was unclear whether the gunshots were the direct cause of death.
A security guard was slightly injured during the incident, but no one else was injured. However, police have not completely dismissed the danger.
It is unclear whether anyone else is involved, Bouchard said.
There was no active threat to the synagogue, which had increased security due to the war in Iran, according to NBC News.
