The shooting occurred after Secret Service officers identified the man as a “suspicious individual” and approached him, according to Deputy Director of the Secret Service, Matthew Quinn. The man then fled on foot, drew his weapon and opened fire; the Secret Service returned fire.

The shooter was injured and is currently being treated at a hospital, but it is unclear how serious his condition is. Another person who was passing by was slightly injured.

The incident occurred shortly after a motorcade carrying Vice President JD Vance passed through the area. Vance is not believed to have been an intended target, Quinn said. Quinn declined to speculate whether the incident was connected to the attack at the correspondents' dinner a little over a week ago.
