The Swedes (and Norwegians):

Songwriter Ludwig Göransson could receive two awards, for the music for the film "Sinners" and for the song "I Lied to You," from the same film. The Linköping native already has two Oscars and no Swede has more than three, so if Göransson wins both of his categories, he will be the new Swedish record holder.

Stellan Skarsgård is nominated for best supporting actor for the Norwegian film "Sentimental Value" and could become the first male Swedish actor to win an Oscar.

The Norwegian film has received a total of nine nominations, including for best film, director (Joachim Trier), actress (Renate Reinsve) and international film - which is perhaps the film's best chance of winning. In Skarsgård's category, Sean Penn, "One Battle After Another", is the favorite.

The duel:

The horror drama "Sinners" has 16 nominations (a new record) and the action satire "One Battle After Another" has 13. They are also directly competing against each other in a total of eleven categories (also a record) and are expected to split most of the big prizes between them.

The tributes:

Stars Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal from "When Harry Met Sally" will lead a tribute to the film's late director Rob Reiner, and, according to the New York Times, Barbra Streisand will honor Robert Redford, her co-star in many films who died last year.

The tone:

Talk show host Conan O'Brien is handling the jokes for the second year in a row. Last year he was praised for avoiding Trump jokes, and this year he is expected neither to mention the president nor the ongoing war in Iran, keeping the focus on the gala and the films.

The TV broadcast:

Swedish viewers can follow the arrival of celebrities on the red carpet and the awards ceremony itself on Disney+ starting at 11 p.m. local time in Sweden with Jessica Almenäs hosting. The gala begins at midnight Monday.
