Jens-Frederik Nielsen, who leads Greenland's new coalition government, meets, among others, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (S) and receives questions about the interest from the USA in connection with the meeting.
One cannot have a partner if there is no mutual respect, says Nielsen and continues:
We will never be a property that can be bought by anyone.
At the same time, Frederiksen says she is ready to meet Trump about the Greenland issue. Nielsen also says he is ready.
We have been very clear in our language. We always want to meet the American president, it is clear that we want, says Frederiksen.
She adds that she thinks "we have been very clear about how the Danish kingdom relates to all parts of the Kingdom of Denmark”.
Prior to the visit to Denmark, Nielsen said that the meeting with Frederiksen would be about "the geopolitical situation and cooperation between the countries".
Greenland is a self-governing part of NATO member Denmark with around 59,000 inhabitants. The election on March 11 received great attention, among other things in light of Donald Trump's repeated statements about wanting to take over the area. Trump claims that he needs the island for the USA's national security and has said that he does not rule out a military intervention to gain control over the island.
Frederiksen has repeatedly emphasized that no one according to international law can annex another country, "not even with international security as an argument".
Nielsen leads the social-liberal party Demokraati. During his visit to the Danish capital, he will also meet King Frederik X.
