Gröna Lund Demanded Millions After Fatal Accident

Failures all the way from ordering to manufacturing lay behind the fatal accident at Gröna Lund. Now the amusement park and two other companies are being demanded record fines. One can be amazed that one of the country's largest amusement park companies chooses not to follow the existing regulations, says prosecutor Christer B Jarlås.

Had they followed it, we might not be standing here today, he says.

A woman died and nine people, including several children, were injured in the accident on June 25, 2023, when the Jetline roller coaster at the amusement park in Stockholm partially derailed.

A newly manufactured arm on the underside of the front car broke, leading to the accident.

It breaks all the way, says Jarlås.

On Thursday, he filed a lawsuit with the Stockholm District Court for gross negligence resulting in another person's death, several cases of gross negligence resulting in bodily harm, and endangering others.

The suspected companies are Gröna Lund, Mekosmos, and Göteborgs Mekaniska Werkstad (GMW), all of which were involved in the production of the arm, which was mounted on Jetline in March last year.

Gröna Lund is being sued for twelve million kronor in fines, and the other three for three million each. If convicted, it would be among the highest fines ever imposed in Sweden.

"Not safe"

The prosecutor says it is unusual to bring charges against three companies and that it is a very complicated investigation.

All companies deny any wrongdoing.

"We do not believe that any crime has been committed within the framework of Gröna Lund's operations, and therefore we deny the allegations. But we take the incident very seriously", writes the amusement park in a written comment.

"No risk assessment"

Gröna Lund outsourced the order for the new arms to Mekosmos, which in turn outsourced them to GMW. Gröna Lund's order lacked, according to the police and prosecutor, important parts about what requirements had to be met during production.

GMW, which manufactured the arms, lacked certification to manufacture amusement park parts, and missed a crucial part in the welding. This meant that the arm would not be able to withstand the pressure on Jetline. This could not be detected during later checks.

Welding cannot always be 100 percent controlled afterwards, says criminal inspector Waldemar Bobeck.

Therefore, one should be a certified manufacturer to make amusement park parts, according to standard.

The reason Gröna Lund is facing higher fines is that they were also responsible for the safety bars, which were supposed to prevent people from falling out.

They were almost fully upright in the places where people who fell out were sitting. And those who remained seated suffered internal injuries.

They are not safe. They have not protected the passengers but have caused injuries instead, says Christer B Jarlås.

The accident occurred on June 25 last year, when the Jetline roller coaster partially derailed after the arm on the underside of the front car broke. The arm's parts with the wheels on either side of the train came loose and fell off.

The Swedish Accident Investigation Authority (SHK) directed harsh criticism at Gröna Lund in its final report. According to SHK, Gröna Lund's order for the arm, which was made to another company in 2019, was deficient. The park's controls were also inadequate, according to the accident investigation authority.

SHK also pointed to deficiencies in the manufacturing of the arm as a contributing cause of the accident. The company that performed the work is also suspected of a crime. The third company that was suspected is the company that was commissioned by Gröna Lund to manufacture the arm, and which then outsourced the work to a contractor without the park's knowledge.
