"Fraud involving incorrect population registration and identity misuse enables crime and affects ordinary, honest people," says Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson (M) in a press release.
According to the bill, a person could be convicted if the act is intended to benefit themselves or someone else, or to enable a crime other than one involving population registration.
In addition, the Swedish Migration Agency and the Swedish Tax Agency will be given expanded powers to share biometric information such as fingerprints and facial images.
The Swedish Police Authority will also be given access to information when investigating certain serious crimes.
The legislative amendments are proposed to take effect on December 1 of this year.
