Sweden Proposes Easing Mortgage Amortization Rules

The Government proposes next week relief in the amortization requirements for mortgages, reveals Financial Markets Minister Niklas Wykman (The Moderate Party) in Ekot's Saturday interview. But there will be no pause – which The Moderate Party had previously promised. I think that's wise, says economist Frida Bratt.

Finance Minister believes that the M does not break a campaign promise by not introducing a mortgage pause anymore, but instead presenting proposals that change and ease the amortization requirements.

With me as responsible, we will never have a situation where we disregard financial stability or that we do not have an amortization culture, says Niklas Wykman to Ekot.

You should basically pay back the loans you have taken, but here perhaps saw that these side effects became a bit too strong for some groups, for example, entry into the housing market and family formation.

In Sweden, there has been a lack of amortization culture from time to time – but now we have one, thinks Frida Bratt, economist at Nordnet.

It is a sound basic principle that one should care about, that taken loans should actually be paid back, she says.

On the other hand, it is good with some kind of relief, thinks Bratt. What the government intends exactly is not yet known. According to Bratt, it could be about abolishing the tightened amortization requirement for mortgage borrowers introduced in 2018.
