According to the proposal, the Swedish Customs will be able to search people or search bags if there is a suspicion that a person has not complied with the law to report that they are carrying that amount of cash. The limit of 10,000 euros, equivalent to around 110,000 kronor, will also apply to trips into Sweden from another EU country.
"We have big problems with both money laundering and cash smuggling, and it is part of the serious criminal activity in Sweden. If we are going to crack it, which we have decided to do, we also need to have this reporting obligation," says Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson (M) to the radio.
The government will make a decision on Thursday on a referral to the Legislative Council on the issue, and according to it, anyone who violates the law can be sentenced to a fine.
There are currently EU regulations that require you to report to the Swedish Customs if you want to export more than 10,000 euros to a country outside the EU.
