Recently, the government decided on a legislative proposal that means more prison sentences can be enforced with electronic surveillance – either at home or in a controlled residence. This will apply to prison sentences of up to one year and six months.
The government aims for the new law to come into effect on June 1, 2026. To avoid losing time, they are already giving the assignment to the Prison and Probation Service to start preparing, among other things, by providing suitable premises, recruiting staff and ensuring that the convicted can be offered employment.
Controlled residences will be run by the Prison and Probation Service and be supervised by the Prison and Probation Service's staff. The convicted person will only be allowed to leave the residence at certain times and for special purposes, such as work or education.
”People who are not considered dangerous to society and have a low risk of relapse are given better conditions for a return to a life without crime by serving their sentence with an electronic tag”, says Minister of Justice Gunnar Strömmer (The Moderate Party) in a comment.
