The government will not proceed with Carl Bildt's proposal for a new national intelligence chief, reports the Altinget.

We have listened to the views of the consultation bodies, says Minister for Foreign Affairs Maria Malmer Stenergard (M).

The government announced at the end of October that it wants to implement the proposal for a new civilian foreign intelligence service. This remains the case, according to the Foreign Minister. However, there will be no new national intelligence director.

We have chosen not to proceed with all the parts that the investigation suggests, this was one such part, says Malmer Stenergard.

According to Bildt's proposal, the head would have overall responsibility for intelligence issues and would also be responsible for cooperation between the new authority and other intelligence agencies. However, critics have pointed out that such a leadership role risks leading to confusion about who is responsible for what and, by extension, which minister is responsible for which issues, writes the Altinget.

The background to the proposal for a new civilian intelligence service is that intelligence work in Sweden today is not considered to be working well enough. Carl Bildt has, among other things, pointed to Must's incorrect assessments during the run-up to Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
