Today there is no such regulation. In some places there can be 18 students in a class, in others there can be 32, according to the government. This is unreasonable, believes Education Minister Simona Mohamsson (L).
We are doing this because children need classes of just the right size, and because a majority of teachers are raising the alarm that the classes are far too large, she tells DN.
The investigator will draw up binding rules for how large a class should be, and also set a minimum level for teacher density. The rules will apply in primary school, upper secondary school and after-school care.
The investigator will be Bo Jansson, who has been chairman of the Swedish Teachers' Association, among other things. He will present his proposals no later than 28 January 2028.
