"Kiruna is undergoing a historic social transformation. Around 12,000 people and 6,000 homes are affected. It is therefore important to move forward on the issue and create good conditions for continued mining in Kiruna," says Minister for Rural Affairs Peter Kullgren (KD) in a press release.
According to the decision, it is LKAB's responsibility to compensate those affected by the acquisition. It also appears that a smaller part of the total number of hectares has been exempted due to the Swedish Transport Administration's intention to use this land for railway property.
The government also says the decision means that Kiruna Municipality's application to acquire the same land areas is hereby rejected.
