Basketball legend LeBron James is back in action after sitting out the Los Angeles Lakers' first 14 NBA games due to sciatica, setting a record for most NBA seasons played – 23.

He passed Vince Carter who played 22 NBA seasons. LeBron James began his NBA career in 2003.

In the LA Lakers' 140–126 victory over Utah, the 40-year-old played 30 minutes and accounted for eleven points, twelve assists and three rebounds.

"The pace tested me, but I'm happy with how I was able to keep up with the guys. The longer the game went on, the easier it became with the breathlessness," says James.

It was the first match in almost seven months so it went as expected.

Back problems kept LeBron James out of action in the preseason and for almost the first six weeks of the league.

"He played with the right mentality, was very unselfish all night. Passed well, didn't force anything, made a lot of good decisions. It's really nice to have him back," coach JJ Redick said of James.

James extended his record for games in which he scored at least 10 points to 1,293, a streak that has been unbroken since January 2007.

He also moved past Reggie Miller on the NBA's all-time list of three-pointers made. James is now sixth with 2,561.
