During 2023, the Consumer Agency received 10 reports against companies that buy private individuals' gold. In 2024, the number increased to 27 and up to September 30 this year, 46 reports have been received.
The most reports this year, 24, have been registered against the company Swedish Gold and Precious Metals. The majority of the reports concern unreasonable contract terms or misleading marketing.
Second on the list of reports this year is the recently listed company Gold Certificate. There, too, the majority of the twelve reports concern misleading marketing and unreasonable contract terms.
Court acquitted
Gold Certificate was sued last year by the Consumer Ombudsman (KO) for misleading marketing, but was acquitted after several rounds in court. And as long as the reports received by KO concern the same complaints about misleading marketing that the court has already taken a stand on, no supervision cases are initiated.
Also, the gold buyer Gold Tour has been reported to KO this year. The reports against the traveling buyer also concern misleading marketing and unreasonable contract terms.
Many reports against Swedish Gold and Precious Metals concern that payments for submitted gold have been delayed longer than promised, the reports against Gold Tour concern that one has not received the expected price for one's gold as well as misleading marketing.
Continue to report
Many still report Gold Certificate for misleading marketing, despite the court's decision that the company does not violate the law through its way of describing its product.
In connection with the company's stock market introduction in September, Gold Certificate's CEO Robert Nyberg commented on the customer complaints and said that they are transparent with their prices and that they are always available on the website.
We were right in court. But at the same time, we have taken to heart the underlying process, said Nyberg to TT.
Regarding Gold Certificate, several reporters state that they did not perceive that the initial price per gram stated on Gold Certificate's website only applies if you sell more than 200 grams of gold and send it in the day after you received the envelope that the gold should be sent in.
For example, Gold Certificate states on its website on September 29 that the highest price for 18-karat gold is 797 kronor. But the one who sells, for example, 10 grams of gold, and does not manage to send it in on time for the speed bonus, can only count on 190 kronor per gram, which is clear when you click further on the website.
