Global Views on Trump: Swedes and Mexicans Most Critical

Arrogant yes, honest no. That is the global image of Donald Trump, according to an opinion poll on the view of the US and its president. Of the 24 countries that are included, the image is most negative in Mexico – and Sweden. People in Nigeria and Israel give a thumbs up instead.

The survey, compiled by the Washington-based Pew Research Center, has asked at least a thousand people in each country. And on the question of whether one thinks Trump handles international politics well, 85 percent of Swedes answer no. Only in Mexico is the figure even higher, 91 percent.

Among the countries where people instead answer yes, Nigeria is notable with 79 percent, Israel with 69 percent, and Hungary with 53 percent.

Modest in Turkey

The picture is repeated when it comes to how the view of the US has changed from 2024 to this year. In Mexico, the share with a positive view has fallen the most, from 61 to 29 percent. Sweden is second, with 47 percent positive last year, now only 19 percent.

The number of countries where the share that likes the US has instead increased is small. But Israel, Nigeria, and Turkey show clear plus figures, in Turkey however only from 18 to 25 percent.

Strong leader

Pew notes clear divides in most countries. People who vote left are less positive towards Trump, as are women. Right-wing voters, especially supporters of extreme right-wing movements such as Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil or AFD in Germany, think the opposite.

When it comes to the president's personality, participants in the 24 countries were asked to choose which of a range of characteristics fit him. 80 percent then answered that they see him as arrogant, followed by strong leader (67 percent) and dangerous (65 percent).

However, 66 percent answered no to the question of whether he is honest.
