Regionally, however, there are fires. South Korea was hit in March by extensive fires that led to the highest annual emissions during the 23 years that the satellite monitoring service Cams has conducted measurements.
Even northwestern Europe, where it has been drier than usual, has been affected by unusual fires in the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Belgium. In addition, large forest fires have developed, including at the Arctic Circle, and in Canada.
In Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam, emissions from fires have been among the lowest measured since 2003. An explanation is the reduced slash-and-burn agriculture, which has otherwise contributed to emissions from fires.
