The squid was caught at a depth of around 200 meters by a trawler in the western Skagerrak. It was already dead when caught and then ended up at the auction – but it didn't stay there very long.
It is not a sought-after food squid, for us humans it is a bit too flabby, says Appelqvist.
Instead, the squid, just over a meter long and weighing 25 kilograms, was taken to the Tjärnö marine laboratory for analysis.
This is a resource we can use to gain more knowledge about life in the deep sea, and try to get an estimate of how many there are.
Appelqvist says that it is not known exactly how big the octopuses can get, but of the total of six ghost octopuses ever recorded in the Nordic region, the largest was almost four meters long and weighed 75 kilograms.
