Now the Supreme Court in Dublin has ruled in Adams' favor. He is awarded 100,000 euros, over a million kronor, in damages.
The former leader of the Northern Irish party Sinn Féin, Gerry Adams, sued the BBC over a claim in a documentary and a web article that he had given the thumbs up for the murder of Denis Donaldson, a Sinn Féin member who worked for British intelligence.
In the documentary, which was broadcast in 2016, an anonymous source claimed that the murder had been sanctioned by Adams, which he denies. He calls the accusation "gross slander".
The 76-year-old Gerry Adams led the party Sinn Féin, which has been tied to the IRA, between 1983 and 2018.
