The emissions ban for new cars in the EU from 2035 will be changed to require a 90 percent reduction, according to German politicians.

The announcement comes from Bavarian Manfred Weber, group leader of the European Parliament's conservative EPP party group, ahead of the European Commission's revision of previously implemented decisions, which is expected next week.

For new registrations from 2035 onwards, a 90 percent reduction in carbon emissions will now be mandatory, instead of 100 percent, Weber told Bild newspaper.

Several major car-producing countries have long pushed to change the previous decision to ban all new cars and vans that are not zero-emissions from 2035.

The Commission's new proposal on car emissions is expected to be presented on Tuesday next week.
