The German government will stop supporting organizations that rescue migrants in the Mediterranean, reports a source at the Foreign Ministry to AFP.

The federal government does not plan to provide further financial support to non-governmental organizations engaged in civil sea rescue, says the source.

Last year, the previous German government gave two million euros, equivalent to just over 22 million kronor, in contributions to such groups. In the first quarter of this year, the support amounted to 900,000 euros.

The financial support has been criticized by Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz's conservative CDU, which now co-governs with the Social Democrats (SPD) in the government that took office at the beginning of May.
