The Christian Democrats (CDU) are strictly against surrogacy and it is even banned in the country, something Spahn supported during his time as health minister. However, it is not forbidden to raise a child born to a surrogate mother abroad.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz says he sees no reason to change the ban or his party's stance on surrogacy.

The question of whether Spahn can remain as group leader for the CDU will be discussed at the next meeting of the party's national executive committee, according to Merz.

The 46-year-old Spahn defends his actions and tells Bild's podcast that it was not an easy decision.
