Camping has become an increasingly popular way to holiday in Sweden and is growing especially popular among Germans and Dutch visitors.
Overnight stays by German visitors at campsites in the country have increased by 25 percent over the past four years, to 1.5 million guest nights. Campsites in Västergötland, Kalmar and Skåne have the most German guests, according to Martin Juhos, CEO of Svensk Camping.
Increased demand
Swedish guests are still the largest group, accounting for around 75 percent of camping visitors, but German guests are growing in number and now account for 8-9 percent of bookings.
More and more German and Dutch tourists are seeking the nature experiences Sweden offers, Martin Juhos told TT.
According to a survey conducted by Svensk Camping among its members, 69 percent have a better or just as good booking situation as last year.
The target group for the accommodation type has broadened. In addition to families with children and active seniors, there is also an adventure group that wants to be active on holiday and is looking for nature experiences, says Martin Juhos.
Most in the West
Västra Götaland had the most camping nights last year, while Borgholm Municipality topped the list among Swedish municipalities. This form of accommodation is consistently popular throughout Öland, Gotland, Dalarna and Norrland. Every year, a total of around one million people visit Swedish campsites.
The survey was conducted among Svensk Camping's member companies in June 2026. The booking situation describes what the bookings look like at the time of measurement compared to the same time the previous year.
