Election Crisis Looms in Netherlands as Far-Right Party Exits Coalition

The Netherlands' Prime Minister Dick Schoof sees a new election as the most likely consequence of the far-right leader Geert Wilders and his party pulling out of the government. It was irresponsible and unnecessary. It should not have happened, says Schoof.

Geert Wilders made good on his previous threat to leave Dick Schoof's four-party coalition on Tuesday.

"PVV is leaving the coalition", he wrote on social media, thereby plunging the country into yet another government crisis.

According to De Telegraaf, Schoof still hopes for parliamentary support for his minority government, but said at a press conference in The Hague that he and the government would offer to resign and then govern as a transitional government - probably until after a new election later this year.

After PVV has left, we no longer have sufficient support, notes Schoof.

Threatened: Patience has run out

In the collaboration, PVV has pushed for a much stricter immigration policy, "the strictest ever", but Wilders does not think they have received sufficient attention.

"No signatures for our asylum plan", Wilders wrote in the message he left via social media.

A few weeks ago, Geert Wilders announced that "patience had run out". The PVV leader then threatened to jump ship and cause a government crisis if they did not get through a ten-point plan with sharp migration proposals.

Negotiated for a long time

The government has governed the Netherlands for eleven months. It took shape after the election in November 2023, where PVV became the country's largest party with just over 23 percent of the votes.

The controversial Wilders had no opportunity to be appointed to the prime minister's post. After long and difficult negotiations, four parties agreed to govern under a party-less prime minister in Dick Schoof. Part of the agreement was that Wilders waived a place in the government.

PVV's popularity soared after the election and during the negotiations, but since the government was formed, the party's support has rapidly declined, from over 30 percent to around 18 and on par with several other parties.

The other governing parties are the right-liberal VVD, the conservative NSC, and the agrarian populist BBB. They have had 88 of the parliament's 150 seats - when counting in the 37 that belong to Wilders' party PVV.
