Students in the final years of high school in Berlin no longer have to learn about the period when the city was divided by a wall.

That's the result of a new curriculum for Germany's capital that was presented. And it has caused protests, German media report.

The decision to remove the GDR period from compulsory history teaching is a consequence of the fact that students will no longer be required to study history for two years. This means that the teaching of modern history, i.e. after 1945 - and everything about the GDR, the Berlin Wall and the 1990 reunification of former East and West Germany - will be removed.

The decision does not apply to all high school students, but the fact that Berlin's young people are at risk of missing out on in-depth knowledge of the city's dramatic history is seen by the teachers' union as particularly serious.

The union believes that only learning about the GDR in a "very limited" way in primary school is not enough and wants responsible politicians to change their minds, writes Der Spiegel .
