Thousands of people have tried to get to the places where the controversial American-Israeli aid initiative Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) is supposed to distribute necessities in recent days. At least 60 people have died in connection with these gatherings.

The operation was completely halted on Wednesday and news that it had been partially reopened came only in the afternoon on Thursday. GHF explained the closed centers by saying that maintenance and repair work had been carried out on the sites and announced on Facebook that two distribution points would be opened.

But just a short time later, one of the two locations was closed. According to AFP, GHF distributed 1.4 million meals on Thursday.

Trade union strike

A trade union representing truck drivers in Gaza announced that it would stop transporting aid shipments after an incident in which trucks carrying humanitarian aid were attacked by armed men in central Gaza. Several truck drivers are said to have been killed while others were injured and kidnapped, according to The Times of Israel.

On Sunday night, according to AP, at least 30 people were killed and more than 170 were injured when they, along with thousands of others, were on their way to one of the distribution points in Rafah.

Israel denies

On Tuesday, at least 27 people were killed and a large number of people were injured. This time, the killing occurred when thousands had set out to collect emergency aid.

At both times, witnesses who were on the scene have told several media outlets that people were shot dead by Israeli soldiers who opened fire on the crowds.

Israel denies that its forces would have attacked civilians in this way. The military warns people not to travel "on roads leading to distribution points, as they are considered combat zones".
