Gais Ends 13-Year Penalty Drought to Defeat Hammarby 3-2

Hammarby suffered a heavy loss in the Allsvenskan gold struggle away against Gais. The Gothenburg team won 3-2 after being awarded their first penalty in the top series in almost 13 years.

On 4 August 2012, GAIS received their most recent penalty in an Allsvenskan football match. Then Jeffrey Aubynn equalized to 2–2 at home against Åtvidaberg at Gamla Ullevi.

On Sunday afternoon, it was time again. Ibrahim Diabate scored 2–1 against Hammarby in the 60th minute at the same arena.

After GAIS's seasons in Superettan and Division 1 between 2013 and 2023 and an Allsvenskan comeback season without penalties last year, it became the first Allsvenskan penalty, and the Allsvenskan penalty goal, for the Gothenburg team in almost 13 years.

Table six GAIS's 3–2 win meant that second-placed Hammarby, 33 points, invites the other top teams to the Allsvenskan gold struggle. Third-placed Elfsborg, which won 2–1 away against IFK Göteborg on Saturday, has 29 points. Just like fourth-placed AIK, which will receive Degerfors later on Sunday.

Mjällby leads and can extend the lead from 34 to 37 points when the team visits the bottom team Sirius in Uppsala on Monday.
