The statement comes in connection with the conclusion of the G7 meeting in Canada.
"The G7 members confirmed their unwavering support for Ukraine regarding the defense of its territorial integrity", the group says in the statement.
The countries are warning Russia that new sanctions may be imposed if the country does not agree to the 30-day ceasefire proposal put forward by the USA and accepted by Ukraine.
Need for security guarantees
Besides sanctions, the countries also discussed measures such as oil price ceilings, further support to Ukraine, and the use of frozen Russian assets.
The group also emphasizes the need for "robust and credible security arrangements to ensure that Ukraine can deter and defend itself against any new aggression".
What these security guarantees would look like is not clear. However, US President Donald Trump has previously stated that Ukrainian NATO membership is not currently an option.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio says at a press conference that the USA does not want to impose new sanctions on Russia, but that it is "an alternative if needed".
"Cautiously optimistic"
Regarding the prospects for a potential ceasefire, Rubio emphasizes that "both sides must make concessions". He says he simultaneously sees positive signs.
Much work remains, but there is reason to be cautiously optimistic.
G7 consists of Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the USA.
The unity regarding Ukraine at the meeting comes after Trump's return to the White House shook the previously united G7 front. Trump's tariff policy towards allies and statements that, among other things, Canada should become part of the USA have created obvious tensions.
