Temperature affects frog calls, a new study shows. Lower temperatures produce less attractive calls, but as the temperature rises, it becomes easier to attract females.

Better singing not only makes males more attractive; it also signals to females that conditions are suitable for reproduction - that it is warm enough for the eggs to survive.

The study of Pseudacris sierra frogs was conducted by researchers at the University of California, and the results are considered significant for conservation work. Many amphibian species are endangered, and in order to preserve them, it is important to understand when they reproduce and how this may be affected by climate change.

The study was published in the journal Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment.
