Frida Karlsson, who won three medals at the Olympics in Italy, two of which were gold, is preparing for this weekend's World Cup finals in Lake Placid, USA.

The 26-year-old has previously said that the World Championships in Falun, along with the Swedish Championship finals at home in Sollefteå, next year will be the end of her career.

Now she is open to a sequel.

I have said that I will stop after next season. But I have also realised a lot that what I want is like ... it will be like a renegotiation with myself. After next season I am on a blank sheet of paper in a way - and if I were to continue skiing then I would be choosing it, says Karlsson at a digital press conference.

It's not just casually that I continue, but there's a real desire to just keep doing this.

“The love of cross-country skiing”

During the season, Frida Karlsson has found it important to find her way back to joy.

"We risk losing the unique - the unpredictable, the human, the fun," Karlsson wrote on Instagram in September.

Now she says this:

It has been really important for me to go back a little to my "why?" and make it clear to you. For me, it is the love of cross-country skiing that I started with. It is still what drives me.

“Generational change”

One star who has decided to retire after this season is American Jessie Diggins. The 34-year-old secured victory in the overall World Cup in Holmenkollen last week - and will celebrate the win on home soil.

Sweden's women's team won ten medals at the Olympics in Italy in February - and is considered the world's best cross-country team. Despite that, Maja Dahlqvist believes that Diggins' absence will be felt.

Quite a few people have said that this is their last season - so I think there is a small generational shift coming here with the Olympics and World Championships in Falun next year, says Dahlqvist and continues:

I think we'll see a lot of new names and there are a lot of younger people from other countries who are also on the rise. So it's not just Sweden and Norway, I think that's good. Otherwise, it will be clearly noticeable that Diggins is gone.
