The French love their pastries. Now the French postal service is launching stamps that smell like freshly baked croissants.

Almost 600,000 stamps with the scent of the fragile, buttery breakfast classic have been launched.

The French post calls the croissant "a symbol of French gastronomy". The stamp, which is adorned with an image of the pastry, costs the equivalent of 23 kronor.

It symbolizes France's influence on the world, says Anthony Richet, manager of a post office in southern French Valence, to AFP.

This is not the first time the French post has done something similar, previously they have had both baguette- and lavender-scented stamps.

Belgium went a step further. In 2013, the Belgian post launched stamps that not only smelled of chocolate - the glue on the back also tasted of cocoa.
