The National Assembly has passed a bill to ban the use of social media by children under the age of 15. The bill now goes to the Senate, France's upper house, before it can become law.
The ban has been advocated by President Emmanuel Macron to protect children from excessive screen time. There are concerns that too much screen time harms children's development and contributes to mental health problems.
The law also includes a ban on mobile phones in upper secondary schools. The law could come into effect on September 1.
Other countries have followed suit. Both Australia and Malaysia have recently introduced a 16-year age limit, and the issue is also being discussed at the EU level and in the Scandinavian countries.
Last fall, Sweden appointed an inquiry into age limits on social media.
