The announcement came during French President Emmanuel Macron's visit to Syria on Tuesday. Ambassadors from France and Syria will be on site shortly.
"I am pleased to announce today our agreement to begin exchanging ambassadors stationed between Damascus and Paris as soon as possible," said Ahmed al-Sharaa at a joint press conference with Macron.
The French embassy in Damascus closed in 2012 when the civil war in the country broke out.
Macron is the first Western European head of state or government to visit Syria and al-Sharaa since the fall of the Assad regime at the end of 2024.
