23 years in prison. That will be the punishment for former South Korean Prime Minister Han Duck-Soo for "dereliction of duty" when the now deposed and convicted President Yoon Suk-Yeol declared martial law in the country.

"He disregarded his duty and responsibility as prime minister until the very end," said Judge Lee Jun-Gwan when announcing the sentence.

Han Duck-Soo was indicted in August for aiding and abetting rebellion, perjury, and forging and destroying official documents.

It happened in December 2024 when President Yoon shocked the country by declaring martial law to protect South Korea from “communist forces.” Yoon was ousted in April last year when the Constitutional Court ruled in an impeachment proceeding that the declaration did not meet the legal requirements for a national emergency.
