Mats Hellström was Minister of Foreign Trade, Minister of Agriculture, and Minister for EU Affairs, as well as Ambassador to Germany and County Governor of Stockholm.
Hellström also sat in the Riksdag from 1969 to 1996.
The Social Democrats' party leader Magdalena Andersson writes in a comment that, "It is with sadness that I learn that Mats Hellström has passed away," and that her thoughts are with his family and loved ones.
Andersson further writes that Hellström's "role in EU membership was crucial, both as the party's chief negotiator in opposition and as EU minister during the first years in the union."
Mats Hellström was 84.
