Long-term unemployed will be able to attend folk high school for double the time to strengthen their chances on the labor market. The Government's proposal is primarily aimed at foreign-born individuals with inadequate language skills.

Today, the Employment Service can offer long-term unemployed a place at a folk high school in a study-motivating effort, mainly to improve language skills. But the time, three months, is often considered too short. Now the government is doubling the time to six months.

"Through education, we create more paths to work. Too many unemployed lack language and have short or no education", says Minister for Employment Johan Britz (The Liberals) in a written comment.

Of the long-term unemployed, about 40 percent, or 40,000 people, of the participants in the job and development guarantee lack upper secondary education, and also often have inadequate knowledge of the Swedish language, according to the government.

In 2024, approximately 5,000 of these attended a study-motivating course at a folk high school.

The money for the effort is taken from the Employment Service's existing allocation.
