Vilnius airport in Lithuania's capital halted flights on Wednesday due to a drone alert, the country's national crisis management center said. Residents in Vilnius county were urged to seek shelter.
During the morning, the military announced that a drone may have been observed near the Lithuanian border, the public service broadcaster LRT reported.
"The reason we are sending a warning to the population is a radar signal with characteristics typical of unmanned aircraft. Activity near the Lithuanian border. The NATO air policing mission has been activated," the military wrote on Facebook.
The alarm was lifted during the morning.
"Residents can continue their normal activities," the military wrote in a new post on Facebook.
Both the president and the prime minister were among those seeking protection, according to Lithuanian media reports.
There were no reports of drones crashing on Lithuanian territory on Wednesday morning, police spokesman Ramunas Matonis told the Elta news agency.
A NATO aircraft was dispatched in response to the incident.
The origin of the drone has not been confirmed, Reuters reports.
